3 Dead In Midst Of Listeria Outbreak - 7 Million Pounds Of Deli Meat Recalled

On August 8, 2024, officials at the Center for Disease Control released a statement detailing a listeria outbreak that has been linked to meat sliced at delis in at least 13 states. Over 7 million pounds of Boar’s Head brand meat have been recalled due to epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data giving a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes. You can see the details of the recall here. The contamination has left three people dead and over 40 hospitalized in a short amount of time. Boar's Head is now facing two lawsuits in Missouri and New York.

How dangerous is listeria? According to the Mayo Clinic, “healthy people rarely become ill from listeria infection, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns and people with weakened immune systems.” A list of symptoms can be found here. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
